Getting slightly away from the debate on how often stooling should be, I
just had to throw this in here for people to tuck in the back of their
minds...constipation is an early sign in infantile botulism. That with a
weakening suck in a one-month-old suggested the diagnosis to me when I saw
mom for a consult. I wasn't happy to be right when I called in the
pediatrician. Having seen plenty of these cases in the PICU, I can tell
you how horrible it can be. (And none of our cases had been given honey; it
was all from airborne spores.) Oddly enough, most of the infants I'd seen
with the disease were breastfed. The ones who were breastfed definitely
had better outcomes and shorter hospitalizations than the artificially fed
infants. What a surprise (TIC).

Still looking for horses, not zebras. And in spite of the referrals to
homeopathy, I still think its okay for an infant who is feeding well to go
longer between stools and have those blowouts.
