There are so many different statements in circulation on how to store
expressed milk that it is confusing even to the supposed experts (us).

I decided to trust LLLI, and went to their website. It was impressive and I
will not attempt to reproduce it here.

For the record (once again), there is no study from Norway on thawed
breastmilk. There was an experiment, NOT done by me, but the writeup was
translated by me for LN readers a couple of years ago. The experimenters
took a sample of fresh breast milk and several samples of frozen fresh milk,
and a sample of freshly mixed formula. They added a known amount of
bacterial inoculum, I believe they used E. coli, and then looked at growth
in the different samples.

The frozen samples were thawed at room temp in air, in a water bath at body
temp, and in a microwave. The microwaved milk was as good a medium for
bacterial growth as formula. The other samples did not support much growth.
They even took a sample that was thawed slowly (can't remember if it was
water bath or room temp air), froze it again and thawed it again, and didn't
get any more growth in it after the second thawing.

BTW, LLLI says that fresh milk may be held in the fridge for 8 days.
