Donna Harris, a Portland mother of two and former hospital secretary
whose desire to find baby formula free of genetically engineered
ingredients led the Oregon food labeling initiative that was defeated by
a $5 million campaign financed by the biotechnology industry. Consumers
were convinced that labeling would be unnecessary, expensive and
misleading. Harris says “corporations just succeeded in keeping
information away from consumers in OR.”
