One thing to look at when blood is seen in baby's stool is it bright red or dark red-brown. Bright red blood usually means it is from the rectum not higher up in digestive tract. A cause of bright red blood can be from taking a rectal temperature on the baby which is usually done instead of axillary. Many years ago hospital nurseries found fistules in babies who were having frequent tenperatures done and then went to one rectal temperature on admission and the rest done axillary. The problem dissapeared
