Hello,
I just visited the SMA web site that was mentioned a couple of days ago. My
goodness, this site is rife with examples of this negative advertising. Not
only is the first picture dark, and unhappy looking the only other color
picture has the mother in her robe. The rest of the pics are black and
white, one of a rather neutral looking mom holding her baby, one of a mom and
baby sleeping (bf must be tiring) and one under the "working and social
activities and bf section" of a dad and a very cute baby, but right out of
the fifties (bf must be very old fashioned). The text was just as bad. One
sentence said that bf took "determination and perseverance and "lots" of help"
paraphrasing a bit here, but really is this like running a marathon? Should
we be calling ourselves the "lactation trainers"? I am so glad for this
discussion. Sometimes, my family doesn't really understand how the marketing
of formula is so bad, nice to be able to show them. It would be so
interesting to sit in the meeting where these images are chosen and the
website is created, to hear the rationale used. And the really sad thing is
that of course, the messages found there are clearly effective, or the
marketing people wouldn't use them. So anyone have a pic, of a really sad
looking bottle-fed baby?
Ciao,
Merilee Reeder CLE
