I'm a bit behind in my posts, but, I couldn't resist adding my .02
I've also been reading some wonderful bits of wisdom.
When I've been working with a mother, who seems to be sending out mixed
messages, I will very often ask her what she wants. I go from there. If it
is a difficult situation and she wants to continue trying to breastfeed I
get two or three options together and let her choose which she thinks will
work for her. I try not to give too many options as that can be
overwhelming.
I feel it is really important to listen to the mother and let her make her
own decision. Especially when the birth was not what she expected I think
that allowing her to make choices and take ownership of how she will take
care of her baby(ies) is very important. Only the mother knows what she can
and cannot handle. Our job (as I see it) is to give her information and
support to make an informed choice.
My hope is that if the mother feels I've been supportive of her making a
choice, whether I agree with that choice or not, next time she will be more
likely to contact me. So, even if she chooses to wean or partially
breastfeed this time, maybe next time she will be able to put more effort
into making breastfeeding work.
