On a personal note, it worked for my baby like a charm for his PKU and
first immunizations--no crying at all and no biting!  By the time he had
teeth, I, too, encountered a nurse who didn't want to let me nurse as she
was afraid he would aspirate my milk.  I stood firm and said that I would
take responsibility for that.  She left to get the support of the ped,
who backed me up, instead, telling the nurse that he would probably pull
off and cry, anyway.  Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened.
Nursing didn't seem to work for my son as an older infant, but it was
excellent pain relief in the first few months.
