Judy,

I suppose part of the answer to your question varies with every child.  My
daughter nursed 3.5 years - avidly regardless of my period returning when she
was 6 weeks, my second pregnancy and period returning when my son was 6
weeks.  He nursed avidly for another 2 years tandem with her as well.  So
maybe some kids are more sentitive to the taste than others.  Or do some
women's milk taste change more???
