RE: Depo

I have had two patients in the last 3 yrs who seem to have been affected by
receiving the depo shot prior to discharge after delivery. One mother had
successfully breast feed her previous child (I have forgotten exact length
of time bur > 6 months). This mother reported nursing in similar manner
plus extra pumping to try to increase supply. She stated she had not taken
shot after first baby but had after this child. Mother reported this to me
after weaning had been completed. Second patient had taken Depo shot prior
to discharge and dispite baby nursing all day and night baby failed to gain
weight Supplementation was necessary by approx. 2 weeks and baby was totally
weaned by 6 weeks. This mother was highly motivated to breastfeed and very
sad to wean but was glad to get some sleep.
Please note breastfeeding mothers are not given Depo prior to discharge
unless they insist and have been told that it may affect their milk supply.
