Good points, Lyn, including the skin-contact ones and choice of laundry soap. Though unusual, there have been case histories published with allergy to rice. Several years ago there was a case series of (from memory) 4 infants. (Sorry, I can't remember the author and journal, but a Medline search, perhaps through PubMed, should find it for anyone wanting to follow it up.) I have heard of another case, anecdotally, through a colleague. Airborne allergens, such as pollens (including grass) are another possibility, and one that triggers my niece's boyfriend's severe aczema.
I can't remember who originally posted about this baby, but I am sure the mother will value her support.
