Aloha Nikki,
I think you did what was right for the situation. We need to evaluate each
mom and baby, and what will work best for them.
I must admit when I first started helping moms, I only saw black and
white--now I see the gray.
When I was in Hawaii, I would get many moms referred from one of our
lactation clinics for breastpumps. These moms would pump for a few days to a
week to let their nipples heal. I must also mention that they were bottle
feeding the EBM. The clinic felt that it was not necessary to feed by
another method. When these moms returned the pump, their babies were back on
the breast. When the moms were healed, they had one on one help from the
clinic to help get baby latched and positioned correctly. I never did get a
chance to talk about this to the LC in charge. I found it very interesting.
I started to wonder then about nipple confusion/preference.
Sometimes moms have so much going on at once that you need to take it a step
at a time--and maybe bottle feeding the EBM would be the best for the
moment--in the step to getting baby to the breast.
Aloha,
Gloria Thai---who misses home very much. Sniff, sniff
