I saw a mom recently who had a lump under her left areola. The skin over the
lump appeared dry and scaly. She said that it had been there for over a
month before the baby was born. The doctor had told her it was just an
enlarged milk duct. That breast never did produce much milk and baby could
not latch on that side, so mom was happy to feed only on the unaffected
side. Shortly after this, the lump "opened up" into several sores oozing
pus. The doctor said at this time, to just go home and put Neosporin on it.
This mom was in a great deal of pain and went back demanding more care.
Ultrasounds done at the hospital revealed a breast infection that had
progressed into an abscess. Only now was she prescribed antibiotics. She
is facing the possibility of surgical drainage of the abscess. My question
to you all: Have many of you seen mastitis that arose "before" the baby was
born, with no other signs or symptoms than just a lump?
Thank you,
  Kris Rogers, RN, IBCLC
