I had a mom today, who had TONS of colostrum if we "hand expressed" but we
got zilch with the pump. I usually call it "areolar expression" in the
beginning and often talk mom through the technique to show her she has
colostrum (which by the way usually IS clear - like honey or lite sugar
syrup.)
If she places her fingers in a C position (thumb and first two fingers of
same hand), rolls back about 1-2 inches, then forward gently right behing the
base of the nipple, we usually get good drops. I suggest to mom that this is
where baby's mouth should be for best latch and compression. When we did this
today, she had a steady flow! We got about 3 cc in 3 minutes and sent it to
the nursery for baby. Then continued on....
