I came across the CPS position statement on tongue-tie and breastfeeding,
published in Feb? 2002.
(I was searching for a position statement by the CPS on formula samples in
ped's offices... :-/)
I haven't seen a reference or discussion in Lactnet so I thought I'd post
it.

>Reference No. CP02-02

> Conclusion
>
> Ankyloglossia is relatively uncommon in the newborn population. Most of the
> time, it is an anatomical finding without significant consequences for the
> newborn or infant affected by this condition. Current evidence seems to
> demonstrate that despite ankyloglosssia, most newborns are able to breastfeed
> succesfully (7,10).
>
> Surgical intervention is not usually warranted, but may be necessary if the
> association between significant ankyloglossia and major breastfeeding problems
> has been identified (20).
>
> More definitive recommendations must await more precise criteria for diagnosis
> along with the appropriately designed clinical trials.
The complete position statement is here:
