Dear wise people of LACTNET!
I had a mother contact me today with this puzzling case...could you help us fill in some of the missing pieces so that we may have some more answers.
This infant was born 51/2 weeks ago by scheduled c-section. This 4th child weighed in at 10lbs 11oz. At discharge the wt was 9lbs 11oz. The babe was a very sleepy child and didn't nurse well for almost 3 full days. The babe had a high bili level (246). Back to normal now.
The baby weighed 11lbs 9oz last Friday and today was 12 lbs.
This baby has no audible bowel sounds, liquid stools (that range in colour from green to brown and sometimes yellow) there is very little odour to the bm's. This is not "hind/foremilk" inbalance...mom went through that with another child...the bm's are absorbed by the diaper after a short time because they are so loose.
Last Tuesday there was 1/8 - 1/4 cup mucus bowel movements and over the next 12 hours they changed to a egg white consistancy and then by Wednesday (last wk) they were liquid diarrhea. Baby has lots of urine that is clear and no odour.
Mother is a very committed nursing mom and she is trying to rule out a "nursing" problem. She is making sure that the babe has a deep latch, is using breast commpressions, and depending upon how sleepy the child is, the babe may or may not be wearing clothing. Breastfeeding sessions generally last for 15-20 mins (one side). During the day feeding every 2 /2 to 3 1/2 hours and 4 1/2 to 5 12 hours at night. Baby is a very easy going baby and not fussy at all. They were waking every 2 hours but now that gaining wt...they are only waking if it gets to 4 hours (it doesn't). [They are going for weekly wt checks to keep an eye on the babe]
Mom has eliminated dairy, eggs, tomato, and no nut products.
Any ideas what possibly might be the problem? Mom would really like to know what is going on.
Thanx for your help
Patricia
