Regarding whether a nipple shield can help with near term (35-37
weekers): Yes, in some cases. One challenge with these babies is that
they can behave like true premies or like term babies and often
vascillate between the two. I frequently see ones that start out fine
and then "crash" after a few days. It's like they expended all their
available resources "being term" and then slip into "being premie" for a
while. I cringe when docs OK a 24 hour discharge for these babies and
then don't plan to check them over before the usual 2 weeks! We always
flag these moms for an earlier weight check with us even when they have
a "full" stay postpartum.
