It's a rule in our family never to leave a family member alone in a
hospital. Consequently, my youngest daughter (age 17) spent the night with
me during my recent hernia repair. I was hooked up to all sorts of things
in a standard sized bed, but as it got late and she got tired, I just told
her to get in bed with me. We spent half the night cuddled up and sleeping
before a nurse came in to check on me. She wanted to check vitals, but had
to ask who was the patient. Ultimately she offered to bring in a cot for
Lydia, but only because I think she was a bit embarrassed that she hadn't
checked on me sooner. We took the cot because Lydia and I were a bit
crowded, but if she hadn't got the cot, I was quite clear that Lydia wasn't
going to sit up in a chair all night when she could sleep in my bed.
