Position Description
Public Health Specialist - ORISE Fellow
Maternal and Child Nutrition Branch
Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Atlanta, Georgia, USA

The Maternal and Child Nutrition Branch (MCNB) within the Division of
Nutrition and Physical Activity (DNPA), National Center from Chronic Disease
Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) has a fellowship position
available through the ORISE mechanism (see last paragraph).  The MCNB Branch
Chief will serve as a mentor.  The participant will assist in the
development and implementation of a program on breastfeeding promotion and
support.  The fellow will gain experience in public health practice in the
area of maternal and child health and nutrition.  Specific activities would
include:
* Review of scientific literature on factors affecting breastfeeding
* Preparation of briefing documents on breastfeeding policy and program for
review by policy makers, hospital administrators, employers, etc.
* Organization of national meetings on breastfeeding policy
* Coordination of national surveys or data collection systems on current
breastfeeding policies
* Coordination of CDC grants on the evaluation of breastfeeding promotion
and support programs


Qualifications and experience requirements:
1.      Graduate degree in human nutrition, public health, or epidemiology with
background in maternal and child health (received within 3 years or less
preferred).
2.      Proficiency with common word processing, spread-sheet, and graphics
software (especially MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
3.      Good coordination, communication, and inter-personal skills, together
with the ability to understand and communicate with people from different
cultural and professional backgrounds.
4.      Self-motivated and able to work independently under general scope of
program objectives and duties of the position.
5.      Strong written and oral presentation skills.


The fellowship is managed by the Oakridge Institute for Scientific Education
(ORISE).  Fellows will work on site at the CDC offices in Atlanta, GA.  CDC
will provide office space and computer access.  Fellowships are initially
for one-year, renewable for up to a maximum of three years.  Salary is
negotiable, but will be set commensurate with education and experience
(typically range $35,000-55,000).  To apply, please send a letter of
