I know of one safe way to eliminate lice: apply oil (cooking oil,
shortening, baby oil, vaseline, etc) to hair, & cover with shower cap to
avoid getting anything else greasy. The oils suffocate the lice. I don't
know how long it would take, but I think a few days. Nasty, but effective
for atleast one of my friends, who treated herself and 2 girls with this
method. She also cut off the kids' hair to help minimize infested area. She
washed every single item (clothing & bedding) that came in contact with the
girls'. She actually went a little over board and put much of their toys,
dolls, and stuffed animals in plastic bags to store in the attic for 2 weeks
to kill any lice.
