JCAHO requires that all mothers get nutritional counseling, especially
breastfeeding moms.
When I first started hosp based LC program I saw every BF mom. After about
2 years or so, as the staff learned :-) it began to be a daily inpt BF class
and referrals to see certain moms from the Nurses. (Doc isn't there and
doesn't know who needs extra BF help! ) I really began to feel good when I
came onto floor and the nurse would say Susy Q had a problem and I told her
x, y & Z. and now everything is OK. They learned from listening to me,
some in-service, some reading, videos, some pointed reminders, some arguing
:-) Consistent messages to mom is THE biggest hump to get over. Sincerely,
Pat in SNJ
