Well, I'm not Jean C, but here goes: the first thing I thought of was the
dimpling and minor heart shape indicating a very minor tongue tie. I worked
with a baby who didn't have a heart shape, and whose tie was tiny, but who
used incredible compression and caused deep pain. The clincher was that the
palate was narrow and the baby was exclusively breastfed for several weeks,
long enough for the wide "breastfeeding" palate to start to develop. The
baby couldn't elevate the breast so that it "spread" the roof of the mouth.
I have a BA, not a BS, so I use inadequate anatomical language; I apologize,
but I hope you all understand what I mean.
I am grateful for this last insight into the palate to Catherine Watson
Genna, who has a deep understanding of these matters and is kind enough to
listen to me. She also uses proper anatomical language, so reading her posts
will help everyone more than reading mine.
The baby had the frenulum clipped and the mother experienced relief.
Treating the pain with ointment helped a little, and a nipple shield
"bandaid" for a few days helped a little, but changes to asymmetric latch
were not accepted well by mom.
Hope this helps,
Kate Sharp
