Correct Jan. The one MD did call the manufacturer and was told the only
reason they have it in pamphlet there was because of the question about the
hormone crossing over. The 2 MDs didn't feel that was reason enough to wait
the 6 wks. So I asked Why use it in with any nursing mother? Response:" Well
moms want something...we don't trust the brstfding for birth control...it
certainly has a better tract record than the estrogen/progesterone birth
control for not decreasing milk volume..it is approved by the AAP." One of
those 2 MDs did a f/u last wk with me on the Depo issue and asked if I had
seen a reduction when doing f/u with moms. Actually I remember one mom about
6 months ago who decided to brstfd on 2nd post partum day and I heard lots
of swallowing (above average). Mom reported brst changes in pregnancy by 2
cup sizes. She got the Depo that day, before discharge, AND she didn't have
enough milk. One case is enough for me to NOT recommend Depo before dischg.
But again not enought for the MDs--we need more proof. What are others

Seems to me that the burden of proof is on the OB to proove that giving Depo
before the manufacturer's recommended time DOES NOT cut milk production.

Also seems to me it would be pretty difficult to design a study to prove it
one way or another.....how would we know what a woman's supply WOULD have
been had she not gotten the depo early?
