I know our NICU has to buy these caps separately. They pack them in zip
lock bags, 10 at a time, with washed, gloved hands. After use, they are
thrown out along with the gradufeed. When we LCs set a mom up with a pump,
we get a Patient Belonging Bag & fill it with a pump kit, 10 gradufeeds and
a zip bag of 10 caps. We get preprinted labels from the pharmacy to stick
on the gradufeeds.
I don't know if we have any provisions for sterilizing caps for reuse.
Since they have to be bought, it might not be a bad idea. We do collect
left over and forgotten pump kit parts, wash them up, package them in
sterilizing bags with steri-strips, and send them down to Central Sterile.
That way, we have loaner kits for our NICU moms when they forget their own.
I don't see any reason why we can't do the same with the caps.
