If this discussion would have occurred while I was parenting my first two
boys I would have said, never wake a sleeping baby. Generally, I still hold
that belief, but then came my last baby. She was sleeping 6-7 hours straight
at night the first month. The first night she did this...I slept too, got a
plugged duct then mastitis from the whole experience. Thankfully, the
mastitis was cured by castor oil packs, LOTS of fluids, Echinacea, and rest.
I then set the alarm and did not let her sleep longer than 4 hours at a
time. Sometimes I pumped, but it much nicer having a baby empty your breasts
than a pump.
BTW, she is NOT doing that anymore. Now she wakes up every 2-4 hours at
night.
