Sorry this response is so late, I've been working on a presentation and
have not had time to read Lactnet in a week. Horrors!

I wonder if this baby has a respiratory problem. Something like
tracheomalacia might make it difficult to lay on her side, may make her
work very hard to bf (thus the sweating and falling asleep), and may
even raise her blood pressure as she struggles to breathe.

Another possibility is a sensory integration problem. Kids with
Dysfunction in Sensory Integration (DSI) will often sweat profusely, may
react very strongly to benign stimuli, etc. Since she is so close to
mom's clothing and body while breastfeeding, she could be getting a
little overwhelmed. Mom can try an experiment, and take off her clothes
and baby's clothes, and see if baby stops rubbing her cheeks and rooting
frantically.

People usually hold babies more upright to bottle feed, and there is far
less sensory input to the face, just that skinny nipple and bottle top
on the lips. No clothes at your cheek, no smell of mom's skin and
detergent, no decisions as to which way to turn to latch on. Of course,
just giving up breastfeeding is not going to get the baby's problem
identified, or help in the long run. If baby can't breastfeed happily,
there is something wrong. Perhaps you can help her brainstorm ways to
find some help in her city.
