The midwife who attended the home birth of my daughter told me of the time that she attended the home birth of an Amish woman. (She worked a great deal in this community in central Illinois.) The woman insisted on keeping her underwear on, which fortunately was large and loose, during both labor and birth. My midwife managed to respect the woman's desire for modesty during birth and still catch the baby--inside the woman's underwear. Then she slowly and gently slipped the baby out of the underwear and into the mother's arms.
Never underestimate the determination of a woman in labor, the creativity of a devoted midwife, and the capacity of a baby to be born. : )
