It is standard practice to remove a margin of "clean" tissue around a
tumor, it helps to ensure that all the cancer cells were removed.
Even if this mom has radiation to the breast, she can still breastfeed
on the other breast. Most of us here on Lactnet have had clients who
needed to and did breastfeed unilaterally and sucessfully. Radiation is
an essential component of conservative breast surgery. It helps to
ensure that any remaining cancer cells that were not removed will be
killed. The mom does not have to choose between increasing her own
safety against recurrence of her cancer, and breastfeeding future
offspring, if any.
