I think that one of the main reasons that immigrants change their patterns
of breastfeeding is because of medical advice they receive. I have talked to
many people who had breastfed their older children, sometimes for many
years, but who were told to give supplements, early solids, etc., etc., by
their physicians when they had babies in this country. As new arrivals in
Canada, many are pretty intimidated by the health care system and take the
advice pretty seriously.
