My answer re this issue is in the archives sometime in 2001. Basically I use
elemental formulas when supplementing because:
--Does not expose infant to whole cow's milk proteins (some data in allergy
literature - not hard)
--Reduces bilirubin faster (Gourley GR. NeoReviews Feb 2000; 1(2): e25-30)
--Tastes terrible so the babies WANT to go back to the breast
--Is expensive so the parents will not want to continue to use it
MOST IMPORTANTLY:
--Is perceived as DIFFERENT from regular formula feeding - a TEMPORARY fix -
only to be used until infant back to exclusive breastfeeding.
