I would be really interested in seeing that research too. I have been
watching with interest a hospital that sends most mums home formula
feeding or exclusively expressing their breast milk to bottle feed due
to little assistance to get babies latched and feeding well from the
breast. There seems to be a prevailing attitude that exclusive EBM
feeding is the SAME as breastfeeding. I have observed mums having a big
express in the mornings and then using the same bottle (and teat) of EBM
all day like a reservoir, because they have been told that room temp is
fine for EBM for 8 hours. So all day the babies get sips of this same
bottle of room temp EBM. When the bottle is emptied by the end of the
day, only then do the mums express again! I know there are countless
management issues here to deal with but I was particularly interested in
the wisdom and safety of promoting this practice, especially here in the
hot and humid desert where room temp in a hospital is very different
from room temp in a home. A mother asked me to demonstrate cup feeding
with her EBM that was 6+ hours old living beside the bed and fed from
repeatedly. I refused to use the milk because I didn't feel assured of
it's safety, and suggested she express some fresh milk. ( I hasten to
add I would have LOVED to help her get the baby on to the breast
instead, she was told her breasts were the wrong shape, but that wasn't
the hat I was wearing that day.)

Am I being too cautious?
