The breastfeeding messages on medications are manufacturer written but
based on FDA principles that a med cannot call itself safe for
breastfeeding infants unless a controlled study was done with that
population. Obviously, no pharmaceutical concern is going to do
controlled studies with little babies. So we are stuck with those dire
sounding warnings. Because of this, I think it is very important that
we all give anticipatory guidance to breastfeeding moms in breastfeeding
classes, consults, and post partum visits re: how to determine drug
safety. It only takes about 3 sentences to explain that many drugs are
safe for bf moms, but the PDR discourages all drug use for legal
liability reaasons, and LC's have good information on med choices if
your doctor does not.
And has anyone else noticed that the most cut and dried, dire warnings
are on drugs manufactured by companies that also make abm, and companies
that don't make abm are more likely to have a "weigh the risks and
benefits" type of statement?
