An adoptive mother nursing a 3 week old has asked me for
information on a “home pasteurization kit” to be used to pasteurize
donated human milk. I am not familiar with such a “kit” and can find
no information in Lactnet archives.

The mother is well aware of current thinking regarding the informal
sharing of human milk and has in-depth information regarding U.S.
milk banks. She is simply looking for information in order to make a
more confident choice in feeding her baby.

The mother (herself a lawyer in another life) is also looking for
language that would assure prospective donors that she will not
pursue anyone legally should medical issues arise later. She would
like to offer prospective donors assurance in writing. Liz? Anyone?

Please post to me privately as well as to the list. It is a difficult subject
and your personal musings are as welcome as your professional
opinions!

I appreciate any and all thoughts on the matter as I am currently
working with a number of adoptive mothers and the issue of “informal
donation” is cropping up more frequently. I suspect there is greater
interest because more women are nursing (and therefore able to
donate) and because more adoptive parents are aware of the value of
human milk.

Thanks for any thoughts or leads.

Susan Johnson MFA, IBCLC
