I have used normal saline soaks or compresses for sore nipples for many
years. We even had a protocol written up at the hospital in 1991. It
seemed to be more effective than tea bags. Fix the latch so no further
damage occurs and use soaks as often as possible for 24 hours, great relief
and healing usual result. My recipe for normal saline is 1 cup water, 1/2
level tsp. salt. If it feels burn-y rather than soothing, too much salt!
At hospital we just got bottle of sterile normal saline solution. This is
an old "home" remedy for healing. I used it one day out of sheer
desperation for a mom with awful looking nipples. She wanted to kiss my
feet the next day :-) I'm not sure where to find it in Lactnet archives,
probably under "normal saline." Some people use a different measurement of
salt (1/4 tsp.) but my recipe is from a home nursing book. Sincerely, Pat
in SNJ
