UNICEF touts its newly revised guide, “Facts for Life,” as straightforward
advice to women around the world. But with increasing numbers of women
safely bearing children in their late 30s and early 40s and many
uncomplicated teen-age pregnancies in the developed world, the experts are
questioning what some of UNICEF’s “facts” are based on.
The guide suggests women leave at least two years between pregnancies, bear
no more than four children and breast-feed even after children have hit 2
years of age. It also says that breast milk has curative powers for sick
toddlers.
