So sorry to hear about these difficult policies. While you're working on
changing them, you'll probably just have to be creative. Sometimes,
depending on the situation, I'll bring the baby into mommy and if there are
a lot of visitors, say something like, "We've got a hungry baby here; time
for the restaurant to open"....some people will get the clue to leave.
Then as I'm checking the ID bands, I'll quietly ask mom if she'd like me to
handle the visitors...(more often then not, she's relieved that I'm the
visitor sherrif). Sometimes I suggest that the visitors walk to the
cafeteria or our outside patio while baby is getting a lesson on feeding.
I'm betting the hospital liberalized the visiting policy for competition
reasons, so that one may be tough to change. We also have some pre-
laminated signs that we can put on mom's door that read, "Mommy sleeping,
please ask at nurses station before entering". Perhaps remind daddy that
he is the protector of the nursing couplet, and once they are at home, he
needs to screen phone calls, limit visitors, and make sure that mom eats,
drinks, sleeps, and feeds the baby. The hypoglycemia policy is another
challenge. Can you find out which neonatologist is the most breasfeeding
friendly, and lobby him/her individually? In the meantime, can the moms go
to the NICU to feed? Good luck, Mary
