>Kassing bottlefeeding method <snip> I will be
teaching this in my bfdg and prenatal classes!<
Sorry to be unbelievably boring, but the ten steps to successful
breastfeeding -- which are one of the instruments brought in by the WHO and
UNICEF to support breastfeeding (just as the WHO code was brought in as a
resolution to protect breastfeeding) -- and the Baby Friendly Initiative
(also brought in and recommended in a WHA resolution) state that any
instruction in bottle feeding should be done on a one to one basis as
mothers need it, not in a group situation. Maybe you meant that you are
going to teach that there *is* a method, not the method itself, in your
classes, if so, that is somewhat different (although it might be worth
meditating on what you say and how).
I know that the USA seems to have very infertile soil for all of the
international breastfeeding instruments -- Code, Resolutions, BFHI,
Innocenti, ILO legislation, 10 Steps, etc. That does not mean it isn't
worth trying to incorporate them into one's thinking and practice. Its not
that great here in the UK, but at least the government / Department of
Health has taken notice of Innocenti targets, for example -- has the US? (I
have never read a comment on this on Lactnet).
Of course it may be that every woman in an antenatal class in the US expects
to use a bottle sometime in her breastfeeding career. If you are working in
that atmosphere, my commiserations.
