Check out the link below-- I think it will be well worth sharing with
the OB involved. I've dialogued with Dr. Glueck for the past few years,
and his research is showing that not only can metformin be used during
pregnancy for women with PCOS, but that it probably *should* be used, as
it seems to reduce the rates of miscarriage (44% one study,65%-->13% in
another), gestational diabetes (40%-->3%), and other pregnancy
complications. In one of the sublinks to the link below, there is a
section on what tests should be run and what values indicate that
metformin might be advisable during the pregnancy. I'm just excited that
Tom Hale has been working on the last remaining piece, metformin during
lactation, and that it looks very favorable. It is my hope that the
normalizing effect that metformin has on the aberrant hormones of many
women with PCOS will allow for proper breast growth and lactogenesis to
occur in those who otherwise have had problems.
