I used to keep track of phone calls, bedside visits, etc and turn it in to my
boss for a monthly report. At this job, I make a copy of the nursery census
every day, and highlight the nursing babies, then make a check mark when I
see mom. I keep the whole month in reverse order on my clip board, then file
it at the end of the month. My boss has not asked for this information, but I
give it to her anyway. To justify our hours and importance in the scheme of
things. I also send out monthly email reports with bf rates to the MCH staff,
Peds and OB docs. I have been there a year and people comment on this
frequently. (positively)
At a hospital with only 1600 deliveries per year, and about at 60-65%
(some months higher) bf rate, we make anywhere from 150-200 bedside visits
per month. This includes pediatrics, med-surg, ER and the MCH area. We get
anywhere from 1-5 incoming calls per day and make the same number of outgoing
calls (depending on birth and bf rate) per day. At my old job, I SAW 1600
mothers per year but it was exhausting.
We do need to keep track of this information. Sometimes at the end of the
day, you wonder, "where have I been all day?" and this will tell you!
