I ALWAYS mention to moms in our bf support group meetings (monthly) that
before investing in a pump, they should try hand expression (I tell them
when they're engorged on day 3 or so, to get under a nice warm shower
and try there, where they don't have to aim to begin with...just get
used to the idea of expressing). Some women do seem to prefer a
pump...maybe it's partly cultural or a certain mind-set. However, I see
no point in wasting money if you find you're good at hand expression.
However, I have one comment to add to your idea Kathy: maybe it would
be better to include goat milking in prenatal classes...not during the
immediate post-partum period when mom should be busy getting to know
Baby and learning to bf adequately. :-)
