Debbie,
I use the syringe and tube under nipple shields as well, and find that
works well.
My favorite use of the syringe and tube is for weak, undernourished
babies who stall at the breast after a few sucks. Mom gives baby a 5-6
second breathing break, then a small bolus to encourage him to keep
sucking. Of course, one needs to assess the baby carefully, and not use
this method if baby has any respiratory stress. But I find it works
very well for those babies who have lost excessive weight and don't
quite have enough energy to eat well on their own.
