<< How does the mum know how much supplement to give if she is trying to
reduce the supplement and increase her supply? She had been trying to
cut back the supplement and nurse more but she was very apprehensive >>
So a mom may or may not be able to produce enough milk to feed her baby
directly from the breast. Knowing how much to use as a supplement depends on
the baby's weight/age and nutritional requirements.*****
Interesting conversation around the topic of SNS.....it seems to me that what
Mary Kay Smith is trying to say is that this mother needs appropriate
follow-up with an LC to guide her in calculating fluid needs and status of
milk production, right? And, may I add, I would conduct pre/post
breastfeeding weights on the BabyWeigh Scale at my consult to determine this
mom's milk volume, adding the amount missing to the SNS to meet baby's fluid
needs. Ongoing follow-up consults need to be conducted to monitor this mom's
progress in milk production until she is satisfied with her situation, which
might be that she doesn't make enough to exclusively breastfeed, but that she
can still breastfeed, supplementing accordingly. Yet, unfortunately, I don't
think all moms who are discharged from the hospital setting using an SNS
receive adequate follow-up. What do others think?
