I am at work today. A nurse told me this am that she had recently
encountered moms who were pumping for premies to be told that they had to
pump and dump for 24 hours after their magnesium sulfate was dc'd. We have
not been doing this before but I guess our neonatologist replied to the
inquiry "the kidneys are not mature and most of the time the mag level is
already to high in these litle ones..." Is there any new data on mag levels
in premies? Dr. Hales site is not helpful today, and I didn't find anything
in the archives. Also could not do a medline search here just now for some
reason. Thanks for any information...and I still would very much appreciate
any hospital policies..basic or related to alternative feeding methods,
especially! Any policies that could be shared could be faxed to 417-347-
6628. Thanks so much!
Sincerely,
Kathy Wright, RN
