Dear Lactnet,
I have been working with a client that has mainly had latch and milk
supply issues. She has worked very hard to get the baby to breast.
Just prior to the pregnancy, a sleep lab diagnosed her chronic fatigue as
"idiopathic hypersomnia"...not like narcolepsy, but she can fall asleep in
less than 3 minutes in the daytime and is constantly tired. She went off the
meds when she found she was 8 weeks pregnant.
She was prescribed Concerta 18 mg, 2 in the morning, 1 in afternoon and
Provigil 200 mg, 1 in am, 1 at noon. My understanding is Concerta is a
relatively new time released Ritalin. I went to the websites and also found
limited info in the archives. Dr. Hale has Ritalin but not these trade
names.
I assume the long acting properties are not ideal for breastfeeding (Hale
lists Ritalin as L4).
The baby will be about 2-3 months old when she would like to resume these
meds. She weighs 12 lbs today at 4 weeks (born at 10 lbs!)
If any of you have any info or clients who have used these meds I would
appreciate your input.
TIA,
Jan Ellen Brown IBCLC
