Insulin (of any sort/brand etc.) is simply a replacement for what mom's body
does not produce. It is not an issue. Diabetes is the issue. Diabetic
moms can BF. It is sometimes a little trickier than for most moms.
Sometimes her insulin req go way down and food goes way up. Needs careful
monitoring in early days and weeks. LLLI has really good info for the
diabetic mom, as do any of the good texts on BF (Riordan & Auerbach,
Biancuzzo, Newman, Lauwers etc.)
BF used to be universally discouraged for BF moms, but we now know that her
diabetes will be under better control because of the effect of the hormones
of BF on the diabetes. Also, baby will be healthier and BF may help baby
avoid diabetes in later life. Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
