I strongly second Barbara's post that it's restricted tongue elevation
that causes the most difficulty with breastfeeding in tongue tied babies.
Another reason we also need the tongue to extend over the lower gum
ridge is that the tongue's presence there inhibits the bite reflex. If
baby's lower gum touches anything directly, he reflexly bites.
