All this talk of male nurses brings to mind an interesting story from a few
years back, when I was doing my midwifery training.
We had a male midwife working in labour and delivery at the time, and it was
actually very rare that a woman would refuse to have him care for her, but
on this occasion a young labouring woman said "I'm sorry, but I"m just not
comfortable with a man as a midwife". They had a chat about it and he said
he completely respected her wishes and would find someone else to care for
her. As he was leaving the room he said to her "by the way, what do you do
for a living".
"Oh, I'm a brickie's (bricklayer) labourer..."
After the laughter had died down and she saw the irony he ended up staying
around and being at the birth of her baby.
