Hello from raining Phoenix area! (Yeah)!
In response to Kathleen's thoughts...The ease at which formula is given
to babies to do hearing tests, to quiet a breastfeeding baby who "eats too
much" at the breast, or just to feed formula, since it's easier than the
breastfeeding assistance drives me nuts, too. Our BF guidelines just came
out (after two years of work, I'm sooo excited! even tho'the stuff is going
to hit the fans)...I have recently been hit with how incredibly frequently
the R___ rep comes around (like once or twice/day)and how much the nurses
here believe in this product. It's really appalling. But, I can't work too
hard at this now, however. I'll turn too many away from breastfeeding
entirely. I have no choice but to be patient.
One of my current examples however is: if you were a nurse taking care
of a C/S patient, would you let her decide if she wanted to get up and walk,
or take out her staples before she went home? NO, you would do the 'right',
evidenced based practice, thing and assist her to get out of bed, or give
comfort or pain relief for the staple removal. Why, then would you feed a
baby a bottle when the mother wants to BF, or suggest to her that it
wouldn't hurt anything when we know it does? It is evidenced based practice
to breastfeed a breastfed baby.
