" I was discussing contraception and breastfeeding with a clinic RN.

She was saying that a certain sector of the population do not wait for
6 weeks or whatever before having sex after the birth of a baby but on
coming home sex is resumed immediately. She therefore does not see the

mother at 6 weeks and wanted to know what she could use in this
situation. Condoms are a no, no! What suggestions do you have? I
have not encountered this before and would appreciate some info."

This scenario really bothered me because I suspect a lot more is going
on. It seems the man is saying "I need to have sex (perhaps citing
terrible things that will happen to him if he doesn't) and that need
supercedes all else!" Perhaps there is along with that attitude the
implication that if he can't get it from the new mom, he will get it
somewhere. The refusal of condoms usually accompanies this attitude.
("I might not feel it as much and my needs and satifaction are the most
important things here.")
When this attitude is considered the norm in a population group, it can
be very frustrating. It is especially important for these moms to
continue EXCLUSIVE UNLIMITED breastfeeding to get the maximum benefit of
lactational amenorreah (sp?). If this is unlikely or there is no chance
to nudge the attitudes, the only choice may be a form of the pill with
it's risks of interfering with milk supply. How sad.
It appears that the function of women in this group is only to serve as
"receptacles" and "baby factories". We have a long way to go to achieve
equality of the sexes (in importance and value, not necessarily in
roles)!
