A friend who is a former WIC breastfeeding counselor sent me this story:
A WIC moms works at a bank. She was off 2 weeks prenatally; she had a
C-section and was home 8 weeks postpartum; that’s a total of 10 weeks. For 6
of those weeks she got maternity leave with pay. When she went back to work,
she was told to punch out when she takes a pumping break. Since she's a
full-time employee she has to work 7.5 hours per day to make 37.5 hours per
week. She was told she must stay later to make up her pumping time, which
means she misses another feeding with the baby. She requested being switched
to part-time status, but was told she couldn't go part-time unless a
part-time job was available, and none was.
She tried a few formulas, but the baby didn't tolerate any of them. She
tried spacing pumping sessions farther apart to save time, but got engorged
and could only pump 1 full bottle when she needed 2 or 3 bottles to leave
with the babysitter.
She got a note from her OB's nurse to allow her to take some unpaid family
leave, but that runs out next week since they are counting her paid maternity
leave as part of her total family leave allotment. The baby is now 3 months
old.
What experience or ideas does anyone have that could help this mom?
Thanks in advance for your responses.
