Breast-feeding needs more exposure in Western world.
"On page 3 of the Jan. 8 Herald-Leader, there were two pictures depicting the hunger that is ravaging Afghanistan. The brief story said that because of the fighting and years of drought, Afghans on a remote mountain have been forced to eat bread made mostly of grass.
But that's not why Bonnie Newell called me last week. She wanted me to know how upset she was that we had published a picture of an Afghan woman breast-feeding her baby.
It's not that she has anything against breast-feeding. In fact, she is a breast-feeding activist and has been since she first breast-fed in 1977. It's just that Newell thinks the media tends to be quick to show Third World women nursing while shying from depicting American women doing the same thing."
